Many of the foreigners living in Germany, who have an academic or vocational qualification granted from their country of origin, encounter difficulties in finding qualified employment here. Often this is due to a lack of recognition/ accredi-tation of their degrees in a formal way or on the job market. ProSALAMANDER, a qualification programme conducted by the Universities of Duisburg-Essen and Regensburg, deals with that problem. It offers a possibility for migrants, who have a degree from abroad in certain subjects to study further, close possible knowledge gaps in their field of education, improve their language skills and finally obtain an equivalent German academic degree (bachelor or master). The duration of the qualification programme is about 12 to 18 months.

In order to create an individual plan for the qualification programme, the existing qualifications of every participant are checked and compared to the German curriculum. Then it is decided which of the courses can be accredited for the German curriculum and which ones are missing and have to be caught up. The study programme is divided into three major parts: along with the technical qualification in the respective subject, the participants receive profound methodical knowledge and German language education. In order to take part in this programme the German language skills of every applicant have to be at Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages before the commencement of their course (more specifically TestDaF level 4 or DSH 2, please check the information here)

ProSALAMANDER not only aims to open up new possibilities for migrants living in Germany to finally enter the job market, but also helps to fight the current skills shortage on the job market in general. In order to be successful, ProSALAMANDER develops new learning materials and scholarship models for this special target group. The students will be individually mentored and counseled.

The programme is being conducted at two locations in the following fields/subjects:

At the university of Duisburg-Essen in engineering science and economics.

At the university of Regensburg in economics and media studies, media and computing, comparative philology and cultural studies.

Additionally the University of Regensburg offers a qualification programme in some natural science subjects. For more information please contact the ProSALAMANDER- team of the University of Regensburg

This programme ProSALAMANDER is being funded by the Mercator foundation with approx. 2.5 million euros

For the second time, both universities will grant scholarships to eligible candidates from 1st October onwards. The University of Regensburg has 17 scholarships to offer, the University of Duisburg-Essen 23. At the moment we are screening all of the 150 applications that we received.

At both sites scholarships of 800 euros per month will be allocated (depending on the duration of the programme). For further information please click here.
